Shinola Watchmakers

Shinola are a modern watch making company founded in 2011, with interestingly traditional values. They are based in Detroit, USA, a community minded city with strong roots in manufacturing. Shinola have transformed an area within the city into a state of the art watch factory and are bringing manufacturing home to Detroit. They are dedicated not only to quality craftsmanship but to creating jobs in Detroit, as they say on their website “because we believe in the beauty of manufacturing. The glory of industry.” I hugely admire this ethos, and what they have achieved in this relatively short amount of time is rather astonishing.

They have trained people not necessarily with any previous experience in the field of watchmaking, creating many quality jobs. Not only do they have their watch factory where the watches are meticulously hand assembled, they have a dial factory, a bicycle factory and a leather workshop. They are soon hoping to expand these so that all the dials and leather work will be produced within the city of Detroit. You can read more on their inspiring story here, it’s well worth a look.

When my watch arrived housed in a pristine wooden box containing all sorts of goodies including a soft leather pouch (which smells divine), leather balm, and even a metal authentication card stating who built your particular watch, I got such a sense of the care and thought that has gone into this product. Looking through this little box of delights you feel you are the owner of something rather special.

My watch is the Runwell 36mm in rose gold. The 36mm dial is a perfect size, giving the watch a modern feel, and yet it is still elegant and feminine to wear. Every detail from the linked bracelet, to the clasp, to the soft pink dial feels like quality. It’s a very wearable item, which I love because it goes with anything and is easy to wear whilst blossom picking in the park, or indeed dressed up for a special occasion!

Shinola have stunning designs for men and women, and with Valentine’s day fast approaching any one of their watches would be a perfect and treasured gift. Take a peek at shinola.co.uk, and they also have several retail outlets around the UK including a rather wonderful looking store in Soho London, which I may have to meander into next time I’m in town 😉

My watch, the Runwell 36mm in rose gold was kindly gifted by Shinola for the purpose of this post.

Thanks to my lovely friend Alanna for modelling for me, with a little help of course from Max 🙂

Beautiful watch and lovely review Hannah and lil Max is such an adorable model. I grew up in Ohio so was close to MI. With so many of the factories leaving Detroit it’s refreshing to see that this company is choosing to do their business there, huge kuddos to them 💛
